Days 77 to 81: Utah
Hanksville, Utah, 6:30 a.m.
I escaped Telluride days ago, and am now pushing through the desert vistas of Utah enroute to Las Vegas. In the interim there were several long and scenic rides, and a great visit from mother Moya and sister Jennifer to ride and camp in the desert. Jennifer and I pedaled 30 memorable miles, while Moya drove ahead to find suitable rest spots. It was fantastic.
Currently in my tent at Red Rock Campground in Hanksville, today I aim for Torrey, Utah, 50 miles to the west, to camp again. I may leave the Western Express Route tomorrow at Torrey for a modified route, to be decided. I'll make a thorough update of these times and places, along with many photos, at first opportunity. This morning I'll pack and load, buy a gallon of water to haul along the day's route, take some gas station breakfast fare, and pedal one day closer to Arizona, Nevada, Las Vegas, and California.

It was great to see these pictures of you all. Jenny, wow, you did 30 miles! That's amazing. I knew you would be able to do it.
Jenny, Moya and Tom- Just want to say that I love you guys very very much. Even more than you know.
Tom- Keep going. You are almost there now. Hope all goes smooth and a tail wind steers you forward.
Much love,
Elisa

"I have never been in a natural place and felt that it was a waste of time. I never have. And it's a relief. If I'm walking around a desert or whatever, every second is worthwhile."

Great to see pictures of Jenny and Aunt Moya riding along with you. It feels like it brings it all full circle - starting in NJ with my family and ending out West with yours. It's nice to see that everyone could participate in one way or another, while Tommy continues to carry the torch. Richie would be delighted!
Keep going, Tom. You're almost there!

Tom,
This is Dave, your Kansas Gatorade connection. One of your previous posts mentions the concept of becoming Non-profit and sponsoring one or two riders per year...I think that would be a great thing. If you work this out please contact Karen (my wife) and me if we could be of help...maybe a planned stopping place for the sponsored rider(s). You can get in touch with us through the String Break link that you so kindly posted. There are times, when reading your entries, that I just want to get in the car and catch up with you...seeing the thing that you have described on your trek. I still believe that what you are doing is touching many people and getting them to think a little less of themselves and more about others. We, that are mostly healthy, are very blessed and don't really understand this until a friend or loved one gets sick.
God Bless and keep up the good work.
Dave

Hi Tom,
So glad that you all had this chance to be with each other. Jen, sounds like you did great on the bike. The pictures are beautiful! Looking forward to the thorough update.
Congratulations on reaching Utah, Tom. You're closing in on the finish!
Love all of you very much,
Kathy
